SPECIALIST UPPER GI & BARIATRIC ANAESTHETIST
Dr Will Birkett is a highly experienced specialist anaesthetist who cares for patients undergoing a wide range of surgeries, with a particular focus on upper gastrointestinal (stomach and oesophagus) and bariatric (weight-loss) procedures.
He studied medicine at Monash University and then undertook specialty training in anaesthesia through Monash Health, qualifying as a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists.
Dr Birkett completed further advanced training in London at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, specialising in anaesthesia for patients living with obesity undergoing bariatric surgery and other complex abdominal procedures. He has also spent time observing international best practices in Belgium at AZ Sint-Jan Hospital, gaining experience in European approaches to perioperative care.
He returned to Australia to work as a consultant at Monash Health, where he is the Clinical lead for Upper GI Anaesthesia. In this role, he is actively involved in education, research, and continuous improvement of anaesthesia services. He also works privately at several hospitals across Melbourne.
Dr Birkett is a member of the Society for Obesity and Bariatric Anaesthesia (SOBA-UK), and the European Perioperative Science Community on Obesity and Perioperative Care (EPSCOP). He is also a keen Geelong Cats supporter.
Dr Will Birkett is committed to delivering patient-centred care that is safe, tailored and evidence-based. He works closely with the our surgical and nursing teams to individualise patient care and optimise recovery.
Dr Will Birkett joins the team at South East Upper GI Surgical Group as our regular anaesthetist, offering personalised and expert care to our surgical patients.
